about

***All the proceeds from this single will be donated to the ACLU to help protect the rights of immigrants.***

I wrote this song during the primary season, as a response to Donald Trump's jingoist calls for nationalism, reflecting on our history of exceptionalism, expansionism, environmental destruction, racism and genocide. This is the second single off the new American West album, "The Soot Will Bring Us Back Again."

lyrics

Westward man can't see his eyes
He's blinded by the open space
All he sees are endless skies, he doesn't seem to mind the planes

He's a shipwreck, he's a bounced check
He'll cut you down in the muddy street
He's a tin can, he's a fake tan
If you can read his smile you know you're halfway there

Westward man don't roll the dice
He stacks the cards to his command
Religion is his secret gun
He'll praise whatever god you seek

He's a shipwreck, he's a bounced check
He'll cut you down in the muddy street
He's a tin can, he's a fake tan
If you can read his smile you know you're halfway there

Goddamn the Westward Man!

Westward man is a native son
His family toiled in the land
His were the first, they were the last
Their names are written in the trees

He's a shipwreck, he's a bounced check
He'll cut you down in the muddy street
He's a tin can, he's a fake tan
If you can read his smile you know you're halfway there

Goddamn the Westward Man!
